Getting back on track

I’ll be honest. I don’t always follow my Context-Focus system perfectly.

In fact, lately, I’ve been completely focused on a new project for Hot Chai Productions to the exclusion of almost everything else, and my Later list has gotten really long.

But that’s ok! One of the great things about this system is that it is so easy to get back on track.

The only thing that I really need to keep up with during these times is ensuring that I add new items to my Later list as they come up.

Then, I can have the confidence that I won’t forget the things I need to do, even if I’m not making them a priority right now.

Everything I need to handle is in my Later list patiently waiting for a day when I’m ready to make it a priority and get things done.

So, I can keep my Soon list clear of everything but the most critical items and free up my time to focus on my new project (more about that in a few weeks, I expect), with confidence that everything else is being handled based on my changing priorities.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve postponed a lot of things (including posting to this blog) in order to focus exclusively on my new project.

Yesterday, I decided to take a break from the project and handle a bunch of the languishing items in my Later list.

Some of the items had been hanging around for a long time, and I decided to move them to Never, since it’s unrealistic that they will ever become a higher priority than other things I want to accomplish. It’s still kind of nice to know that, should I ever be out of things to do, or feeling very productive, I can review my Never list and find them there.

Some items had already been completed, so it was satisfying to move them to my Complete list.

From the rest, I picked out the things that I wanted to accomplish now and moved them to my Soon list.

Then, I worked through that list until I felt satisfied.

Finally, I moved a couple of remaining items back to Later. I’ll consider handling those the next time I take a break from my top priority.

So, I’m happy that the system is still working for me, even when I have a long-running top-priority item. As a bonus, I feel like batching the lower priority items up into times when I’m feeling productive is making me more efficient overall.

I still feel in control of my life, even when my Later list is getting long! It’s just a reflection of my conscious and informed decision to make something else a higher priority in my life.

Sooner Or Later and the Context-Focus system are showing me a realistic picture of my life, and giving me the power to postpone lower priority items with the confidence that I can “get back on track” any time I choose!
